Measure the area to be sown by checking the general appearance of the land: examine the composition of the soil, the nature of the land, and the altitude difference. Avoid sandy or excessively clay soils that could cause maintenance problems in the medium to long term. Remove weeds, debris, and old grass, then make sure the land has an adequate slope for good water drainage. Once these preliminary steps are complete, continue with our detailed instruction guide for successful turfing.
Here is a detailed step-by-step procedure to guide you through successful turfing. Remember that in addition to a correct technical installation, adequate and adequate watering after installation is essential.
Prepare the bottom of your land to accommodate topsoil by eliminating holes and debris. Be sure to create a gentle, steady slope that extends away from the center to the edges to facilitate effective drainage.
It is recommended to spread 4 to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm) of topsoil evenly across the field. For sandy soil, a thickness of 6 inches (150 mm) is optimal.
Use a roller filled with water and a rake to compact the soil, making sure you get a smooth, stable surface that doesn't mark under weight. Avoid using a steamroller, as this may hinder the establishment of new roots in the soil.
With the fertilizer spreader, neutralize the acidity of the soil with an application of granular lime. Lime improves the assimilation of fertilizers, provides deep rooting and provides better plant growth. Lime is spread over the desired area by running parallel and consecutive back and forth movements (side by side).
Apply rooting fertilizer (formula 8-16-4) in the same way as lime. This fertilizer underlies the establishment of the new seed after germination.
Once your land is properly prepared, you are ready to begin the installation. Be sure to order your grass at least 48 hours in advance to ensure delivery availability.
For optimal installation, start at the bottom of the field and work your way up to the exit to avoid crushing freshly laid grass. Place the rolls interlocking them like bricks, and use a sharp knife or hatchet to cut the rolls to adjust the dimensions and ensure even joints. Avoid small cuts as they can dry out quickly and die.
Make sure that the rolls fit together perfectly without overlaps. Avoid spaces between joints, which could encourage weed growth.
Use a roller filled with water to level out grass patches. This step ensures that the plates adhere properly to the ground, thus facilitating their rooting. Also, be sure to remove any grass scraps, as they can turn the grass underneath yellow and alter the overall appearance.
score : for steeply sloped surfaces, grass patches can move and dry out. We recommend using biodegradable fixatives, such as wooden eclipses or a retention net, to keep the plates in place and avoid drying problems.
It is essential to saturate the grass surface with water immediately after installation, until it is too wet to walk on, for the first 24 to 48 hours. Then, keep the grass moist for the next 7 days, adjusting the watering according to temperature and wind.
Avoid overwatering : excess moisture can prevent roots from sinking properly, cause rot and promote disease. For large areas, water in parallel with the installation to maintain freshness, without creating muddy areas.
Water lightly and daily for the next 7 to 14 days to keep the soil moist and facilitate germination. Watering is most effective early in the morning or in the evening when evaporation is minimal.
